Do you want to learn to speak and write English? The Community Learning Center (CLC) can help you!

Students from more than 65 countries take classes the CLC. The CLC offers 6 levels of English classes (ESOL), from basic literacy to high intermediate. Students can take classes in the morning (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.) or evening (6:15 – 9:15 p.m.). Classes meet 2 or 3 times a week from September to June. The CLC welcomes all people living in Cambridge, regardless of immigration status.

CLC students have access to conversation and computer classes, career advising and help finding jobs. The CLC also provides support to students with disabilities or learning challenges.

In addition to general English classes, the CLC has specialized English classes for older adults, hosted at the City’s two Senior Centers, and for Cambridge parents.

“As a student in the ESOL program at the CLC, I learned far more than just English. I improved my speaking and writing skills, as well as my listening and reading comprehension,” explains Jorde, who graduated from the ESOL program in June. “I also acquired technological skills that enabled me to communicate with greater confidence in everyday situations. I also discovered American culture, the professional world, and the community resources available to immigrants. These classes helped me build my self-confidence and meet people from diverse cultural backgrounds.”

If you are a high-level English language learner, we encourage you to enroll in other programs at the CLC. Through the CLC's the Bridge to College Program, Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program, and Early Childhood Education Career Training Program, students continue improving their English while working toward their career or education goals.

If you or someone you know is starting to learn English, the CLC has immediate openings in our lower-level classes! There are also some openings in high-level English classes.

The first step to taking English classes at the CLC is to attend an information session and take a placement test. Sign up for an information session here!
