The Office of Workforce Development (OWD)’s Youth Employment team collaborates with other City initiatives, local employers and non-profits in Cambridge to offer enriching paid internships related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) to Cambridge teens during the school year and summer. These internship opportunities include:
Innovators for Purpose Studios
Innovators for Purpose Studios, located at the Cambridge Public Library, teens learn how to use design, creative technologies such as coding, web and app design, augmented reality, 2D/3D animation, motion graphics and more to build experiences that advance social justice and spark positive change.
Science Research Mentoring Program (SRMP)
Based at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA), the Science Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) internship provides an opportunity for students from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School to work on a year-long independent research project in astrophysics under the guidance of CfA astrophysicists. Students learn what it is actually like to conduct real, cutting-edge research and work closely with living scientists from diverse backgrounds.
Media Arts
During this internship, teens learn the basics of broadcast journalism through short stories, news reporting, and sports filming. Get paid to create videos for CRLS's broadcasting station. Videos can be about culture, politics, self-reflection or world news. The purpose of this work opportunity is to give students a chance to experience the future of broadcast journalism in their school.
STEAM Careers Exploration Program
This summer internship, offered through the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program, gives teens hands-on experience and behind-the-scenes access at several Cambridge-based STEM companies. The goal of the program is to demystify STEM workplaces for local teens, with the hope that their experience will encourage them to pursue higher-level STEM classes in high school, decide to major in STEM fields in college, or otherwise follow a training path that leads to a well-paying career at a local company.
If you are a teen interested in a STEAM internship or you are an employer in a STEAM industry that wants to connect with Cambridge teens, contact Nina Nolan, STEAM Internship Coordinator at nnolan@cambridgema.gov.
