Portland Loo Public Toilet Installation Project

The installation of these public toilets was made possible through the City of Cambridge's Participatory Budgeting process. Residents voted to fund these projects through Participatory Budgeting Cycles 6, 8, and 10, demonstrating the community's support for expanding access to public restroom facilities throughout Cambridge.

The Portland Loo is a single-occupancy public restroom designed specifically for use in parks, plazas, and other public spaces. It is built with durable materials, is fully accessible, and is designed to be easy to clean and maintain while providing a safe, convenient restroom option for the public. Modeled after the “Portland Loo” of Portland, Oregon, the public toilet is a simple, sturdy, graffiti-resistant, flush toilet kiosk. It is designed with open grating that preserves privacy while discouraging vandalism and crime. The coating on the steel wall panels makes it simple to clean with a hose, and all plumbing and building components are common and easy to replace or upgrade. 

The installation of the three Portland Loo public toilets is currently out to bid. Once a construction contractor has been selected and work begins, construction of all three facilities is anticipated to take approximately one year to complete.
