DPW offices at 147 Hampshire St. are open to the public, by appointment only. Appointments can be made by phone at 617-349-4800 or by email at Individual staff are also available for appointments outside of these hours as needed; please contact the office with the details of your issue, and we will coordinate with the appropriate staff member. Many DPW services can be provided online, and DPW phones are staffed 24/7 to respond to urgent concerns.

The Recycling Center is open on Tuesdays & Saturdays ONLY.


About the Recycling Center

The Recycling Center, located at 147 Hampshire St. in the back right corner of the Public Works yard, is open to all Cambridge residents looking for a safe and efficient way to dispose of items that cannot be recycled curbside. 

The hours of operation are: 

Tuesdays, 4PM-7:30PM

Saturdays, 9AM-4PM

Get Rid of It Right

To determine how an item in your household can be disposed, please use our "Get Rid of It Right" tool below. 


Accepted Items:


  • Universal waste (i.e. fluorescent bulbs, mercury-containing waste such as thermometers and thermostats, and batteries)
  • Electronics (small appliances, computers, monitors, cell Phones, string lights, and other small electronics) Use the Get Rid of it Right tool to determine if the electronic item is accepted at the Recycle Center.
  • Plastic Bags - See here for which types are accepted
  • Books and 3-Ring Binders
  • Scrap Metal Items - no sealed containers, no appliances
  • Bulky plastics like laundry baskets and pails
  • Printer Cartridges
  • Recyclables such as paper, metal, cardboard, plastic containers
  • Motor Oil - secured in a container with a tight cap



Businesses and Non-profits


The Recycle Center is open to Cambridge residents, small businesses and non-profit organizations in Cambridge with 50 employees or fewer. Please contact DPW if you plan on bringing more than 50 items for disposal at the Recycle Center.
