The City of Cambridge, in partnership with Biodiversity for a Livable Climate (Bio4Climate), is planting its third Miyawaki miniforest on the grounds of the Peabody Elementary School at 70 Rindge Avenue.
The approximately 2,000-square-foot forest will include more than 40 native tree and shrub species. It will be planted using the Miyawaki method—an approach developed by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki that involves planting a mix of native species close together in a small area to create a dense, fast-growing, and self-sustaining forest. These miniforests grow up to 10 times faster, become up to 30 times denser, and support significantly more biodiversity than traditional urban plantings.
A Miyawaki miniforest planting event will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. outside of the Peabody School, cohosted by Bio4Climate. This is a great opportunity for community members to take part in creating a lasting and resilient urban forest. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring snacks and water to stay hydrated and energized.

This project builds on the success of Cambridge’s previous miniforests and reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
