Upcoming Traffic Changes on Broadway beginning June 6

As part of the ongoing redevelopment of the Volpe Parcel, now known as Kendall Common, and of Eversource’s Greater Cambridge Energy Project, Broadway will undergo significant traffic and pedestrian changes to support the construction project and establishment of the new substation. Please be advised that the contractor, JMA, will make the following changes:

  • General Change:
    • The traffic pattern and road allocation will be consistent with the current condition of Broadway between Galileo Way and Ames Street. This condition will be extended along Broadway to the intersection of Third and Main Street.
  • Traffic Changes:
    • One-Way Vehicle Traffic: Broadway between Galileo Way and Third and Main Street will be one-way only, heading eastbound toward Boston.
    • Two-Way Bicycle Traffic will be established in a separated bicycle facility on the southern side of Broadway.
    • Intersection Changes: Signal and line striping modifications will be made at intersections to support the reconfigured roadway.
  • Pedestrian Access:
    • Pedestrians will need to cross Broadway at either end of the detour (intersection of Galileo Way or Third and Main) and at Ames Street (from the Loughrey Walkway) and may only walk on the south side of Broadway (opposite the construction work zones).

Implementation Timeline:

  • Changes will begin on Friday, June 6th and are expected to be fully in place before the morning commute on Monday, June 9th.
  • Preliminary construction work, including paving at specific locations, will take place in the weeks leading up to implementation to improve conditions for the detoured routes.

Expect Delays & Detours:  Significant closure and detours will be in place.  Plan your travel accordingly.  These changes are expected to remain for at least one year.
