Construction Notice: Water Main Work to Begin Week of September 28, 2026
In coordination with the DPW Complete Streets Project 26A, the Cambridge Water Department (CWD) will begin replacing the existing 6-inch cast iron water main on Chetwynd Rd. beginning on September 28, 2026, or shortly after. During this work, we will upgrade the 100-year-old cast iron main to a new 8-inch ductile iron main. The project is expected to take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions.
IMPROVING YOUR WATER SYSTEM:
As part of our ongoing maintenance program, we must periodically recondition and replace sections of our water system to maintain high-quality water service and adequate system pressure. Some of the benefits of this work are improved water quality, better flow, increased fire protection, and better control of our system.
HOW WILL THIS WORK AFFECT YOU?
WATER SERVICE - The water main or your water service may need to be taken out of service to improve the system. During this project, we will make every effort to minimize water service interruptions. While work is in progress, residents and businesses along the project route may receive a temporary water supply during these interruptions. We will notify you at least 72 hours in advance of any water interruptions and make every effort to minimize the impact on your water service.
PARKING – Temporary parking restrictions will be in effect during construction, and every effort will be made to minimize this inconvenience. Daily work zones will be posted with no parking signs, and every effort will be made to prevent any vehicles from being towed.
PLEASE…. WATCH YOUR STEP!
If you live, travel, work, or shop in the project area, you'll notice several openings in the roadway to access the water main at various locations. All openings will be covered at the end of each workday and will be resurfaced as soon as possible after the project is finished. You can help by cautioning your family and friends to watch their steps and to avoid the work areas as much as possible.
IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM:
If you experience a problem related to this work, please report it directly to the Cambridge Water Department by calling David Regan @ 617-349-4776, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 am and 3:00 pm, or our 24-hour emergency number at 617-349-4770. Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we work to improve your water system.
