January 2016
  • Contractor has installed final brickwork in sidewalk as well as planters to complete project.

October 2015
  • Road reconstruction is underway with a single lane of traffic.  Holyoke and Dunster Sts will be closed during final paving. 
  • Waiting on Eversource Electric to adjust vault on left side of Mt. Auburn St.
  • Brick sidewalk installation complete with punch list items remaining.
  • Final paving anticipated in October 2015

September 2015

  • Replanting and testing sprinkler system on Waverly Path by the end of September
  • Starting excavation at the Mass Ave Bus Stop by the last week of September
  • Grinding the intersection of Mt. Auburn, Dunster, and Holyoke streets end of September with paving to follow


The city’s contractor, Newport Construction, will perform roadway milling on Mount Auburn Street between Dunster and Holyoke streets as well as a small section of Holyoke Street on Thursday, September 24, in preparation for paving. Work hours for the milling operation will be 7 AM to 4 PM and one lane of traffic on Mt. Auburn Street will remain open during milling with periodic detours possible.

Crews will pave Mount Auburn Street between Dunster and Holyoke streets on Wednesday, September 30. Work hours will be 7 AM to 4 PM and one lane of traffic on Mt. Auburn Street will remain open during paving with periodic detours possible.

What to Expect During Roadway Milling and Paving

  • Mt. Auburn Street will remain open to one lane of traffic during milling and paving.
  • During the milling and paving operations, there will be periodic detours and road closures of Dunster and Holyoke streets while crews perform the work. Police details and signage will be onsite to direct drivers.
  • There cannot be any cars parked on the street during the milling and paving operation. Please be sure to check “No Parking” signs to avoid being ticketed and towed.
  • Please note that all operations are weather dependent and may be rescheduled due to rain.

July 2015    

During the month of July, crews will begin to reconstruct the sidewalks on Mt. Auburn Street. Final roadway paving is scheduled for AUgust 2015.

Project completed January 2016.

From April 2015 through July 2015, the following work will be performed associated with this project.

  • Utility work (drainage)
  • Reconstruct the sidewalks from JFK Street to Holyoke Street (Sidewalk reconstruction on the northern (odd) side of Mt Auburn Street. Once this section is complete, crews will shift to the southern (even) side. 
  • Reconstruct the roadway from JFK Street to Holyoke Street   

The improvements are expected to take about 4 months to complete.



Project Overview

The City will reconstruct Mt. Auburn St between JFK St and Holyoke St this summer. The scope of work includes: 
    • Reconstruct existing roadway and sidewalks. 
    • Remove 4 parking spaces on the north side of the street to widen the narrow sidewalk. This will enhance the pedestrian space, facilitate outdoor dining, seating, bicycle parking and street tree plantings. 
    • Install new lighting fixtures. 
    • Plant additional trees.
