O'Connell Library Pocket Park

This project includes the construction of a new pocket park in the front and sides of the O’Connell Library. Scope will include but not limited to electrical, lighting, outdoor power outlets, irrigation, new benches and site furnishing, pavers, landscaping, trees and plantings, granite stepping stones, seat wall, curb, front stone steps at the back of sidewalk, and bike racks. Several items for this project have been gifted by the East Cambridge Open Space Trust (ECOST), including benches, picnic table, granite seat walls, stepping stones, steps and lanterns. 

This project has been completed.  No further updates to this project page will me made.

Fall 2021 expected work, weather permitting.

Week ending September 3: Brick work.

Week ending September 13: sidewalk work.

Week ending October 1: wheelchair ramp work and sidewalk work. 

Week ending October 8: Brick work near sidewalk and finishing parking lot. 


Spring 2021 expected work, weather permitting. 

Week ending March 26: excavate stair wall and begin stair wall footings

Week ending April 2nd: continue work on stair wall and install exterior electric

Week ending April 9th: installation of walls and lantern


The City's contractor, Argus Construction Corp, will begin mobilizing on Wednesday, December 9th to begin construction. The following is a schedule of expected December work, weather permitting. 

Week ending December 11th: Install site fence and erosion control

Week ending December 18th: Strip and dispose of loam, sawcut sidewalk, remove existing curb

Week ending December 25th: excavate and prep wall base


The City's contractor Argus/Cambridge Landscaping will be performing scheduled tree work at the O'Connell Library on Thursday November 12th from 8am-9am. Residents may hear sounds typical of tree work such as chainsaws and chip truck.


On Thursday, November 5th and continuing into Friday, November 6th Argus will begin demo to the existing rod iron fencing, and replace with perimeter construction fencing to secure the site for construction. Library returns, will be accepted at the rear door of the library during the construction of the pocket park.

The schedule below is an estimate and subject to change:

Fall/Winter 2020 – demo and site preparation, sub-grade site, install site electrical, install concrete foundations for gifted items

Spring 2021 – resume concrete foundations, install gifted granite items, lanterns,  granite steps, stone pavers

Summer 2021 –  resume above to include; unit pavers, irrigation, wood benches and tables, bronze handrails, site furnishings, site landscaping

Fall 2021 – clean-up site and demobilize
