The City’s Contractor, Newport Construction, has received permission to extend work hours to include Saturday, October 18. Newport will be milling the intersection at Cambridge St and Elm St. Saturday work hours will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
On Monday, October 20th, weather permitting, Newport will be performing final roadway paving on Elm St from Hampshire St to Webster Ave.

Once final roadway paving is completed, Newport construction will be installing raised crosswalks at Elm St at Webster Ave, Elm St at Cambridge St, Elm St at Hampshire St. Abutters of Elm St will be impacted. The crosswalk will remain passable, if necessary, but please plan trips accordingly.

Vehicle access in and out of properties will be restricted during the paving operation. Please plan vehicle trips accordingly.
As the intersection is milled, the surface will be rough, with raised manhole covers. The roadway will be lower, making the curbs higher. Please use caution when opening car doors, so they aren’t damaged on curbs. Motorcycles and bicycles use caution when traveling on milled surface.
Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles and City services.

To ensure the roadway remains in good condition for many years to come, Newport Construction will perform full-depth roadway reconstruction at the intersection of Elm Street and Webster Avenue on Saturday, September 27. The base (binder) layer of asphalt is anticipated to be poured on Monday September 29th , weather permitting . Crews will begin to complete the work on the even side of the street between Hampshire and Cambridge Street. Once that section is complete, they will continue to work on the odd side of the street between Hampshire and Webster Ave. The scope of the work includes the removal of the existing sidewalks, removal and resetting curbing, followed by the installation of the new sidewalks.
This work is expected to take 3-4 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
