Construction Notice: Contractor to Begin Water Main Work Week of May 18th

As part of the ongoing reconstruction project, the City’s contractor Newport Construction will begin water main replacement on Sciarappa Street from Thorndike Street to Cambridge Street starting the week of May 18th, weather permitting.

Detours will be in place during work hours. Please look for Detour signs, Road Closed signs, and No Parking signs as they will be changing frequently during the work.

What to Expect During Construction:

General work hours will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

  • “No Parking” signs will be posted; please be sure to check dates/times.
  • Vehicle access in and out of properties will be maintained but may be restricted for short periods.
  • Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles and City services.

The water main installation and subsequent water service tie-ins are expected to take approximately 12 weeks, weather permitting. This will result in occasional water shutdowns. The Cambridge Water Department will notify residents when water shutdowns are expected to occur. An additional notice will be sent to residents announcing the start of street and sidewalk reconstruction in the coming months.

Construction Notice: Base Paving Scheduled for Friday May 15 with a Rain Date of Monday May 18

The City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will be placing a base (binder) layer of asphalt on Sciarappa Street from Charles St to Thorndike St on Friday, May 15 with a rain date of Monday, May 18, weather permitting.

Work is expected to take approximately one day to complete, weather permitting. If conditions are wet on the day of scheduled paving, work will be delayed. Please visit the project page for any updates regarding rescheduling at www.cambridgema.gov/sciarappast.

Detours will be in place during work hours. Please look for Detour signs, Road Closed signs, and No Parking signs as they will be changing frequently during the work.

Newly paved areas will be reopened to users as conditions allow, typically within a few hours of completion.

The roadway surface elevation will also be lower than usual, making curbs higher for parked cars. Please use an abundance of caution when opening car doors so as not to damage them on the curbs.

Curb and sidewalk work will follow the completion of roadway binder paving, weather permitting. Curb and sidewalk work on Sciarappa St from Charles St to Thorndike St is expected to take approximately twelve (12) weeks to complete.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • General work hours are 7 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • On street parking will be impacted during this work. Please check posted No Parking signs.
  • If your driveway is within the limits of binder paving, please plan trips accordingly. Vehicle access in and out of properties will be restricted during the paving operation.
  • Access will be maintained for City services and emergency vehicles.

Final roadway paving will occur at the end of the Sciarappa Street Reconstruction Project and will be announced via an additional notice.

Construction Notice: Full Depth Roadway Reconstruction to Begin Week of May 4th 

As part of the Sciarappa Street Reconstruction Project, the City’s Contractor, Newport Construction, will begin roadway reconstruction on Sciarappa Street between Charles St and Thorndike St during the week of May 4th. This work is anticipated to last for approximately two weeks, weather permitting.

To ensure that the roadway conditions will be favorable for many years to come, crews will engage in full-depth reconstruction. After the existing road is removed, crews will install the first layer of pavement, then continue with the removal and replacement of the curbs and sidewalks.

At the end of each day, the contractor will clean the work site to allow for motorists to utilize the roadway. We kindly ask that motorists drive through the construction zone slowly outside of general working hours.

Detours will be in place during work hours.  Please look for Detour signs, Road Closed signs, and No Parking signs as they will be changing frequently during the work.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • General work hours 7am-4pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Please check posted No Parking signs.
  • During this work, the roadway will be lower, making the curbs higher for parked cars. Please use caution when opening car doors as to not damage them on the curbs.
  • Access will be maintained for abutters whenever possible.
  • Access will be maintained for City services and emergency vehicles.

Construction Notice: Contractor to Mobilize the Week of December 15

Sciarappa Street is scheduled for reconstruction between Monsignor O’Brien Highway and Charles St as part of the City’s 5-Year Plan for Streets and Sidewalk. Consistent with the community meetings held in November 2022, the City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will mobilize to Sciarappa Street beginning the week of December 15, to start utility work. This project will include utility installations to improve roadway drainage and water services, sidewalk enhancements for accessibility, traffic calming measures, and paving.

Crews will install tree protection and silt sacks along the street and will saw cut areas of the roadway prior to the beginning of utility work.

Detours will be in place during work hours. Please look for Detour signs, Road Closed signs, and No Parking signs as they will be changing frequently during the work.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • General work hours will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
  • “No Parking” signs will be posted; please be sure to check dates/times.
  • Vehicle access in and out of properties will be maintained but may be restricted for short periods.
  • Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles and City services.

The drainage work is anticipated to take 4-6 weeks, as winter weather allows. Following completion of drainage work, contractor will move to water line replacement. Additional details of the schedule, other utility work and surface restoration will be provided to abutters early spring after winter progress is assessed.
