Tobin Montessori & Darby Vassall Upper Schools Project

This project will provide new facilities for the Tobin Montessori School, Darby Vassall Upper School, Special Start and Department of Human Services Programs preschool and after school programs. In addition, the project provides an infrastructure opportunity to help mitigate street flooding in the neighborhood with the construction of a 1.25 million gallon underground storm water tank on-site. The project is being designed as a Net Zero Emissions Facility and includes renovation of the open space area around the school.

Construction Notice:  Roadway Milling and Paving on Vassal Lane Beginning August 18

The City’s contractor, R.M. Pacella Inc., will be milling (grinding) and paving Vassal Lane in front of the Tobin School site beginning Monday, August 18. Milling is expected to take one day, followed by paving on Tuesday, August 19 (weather permitting).

Work hours: 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • On Street-parking spaces will be impacted during this work. Paper signs will indicate the hours and locations where parking is not allowed. These signs will be posted at least 24 hours before restrictions are in effect.
  • Detours will be in effect while work is underway (between 7:00 a.m. and 6 p.m.). Please pay careful attention to signs and directions from detail officers.
  • As the street is milled, the surface will be rough, with raised manhole covers. The roadway will be lower, making the curbs higher for parked cars. Please use caution when opening car doors, so they aren’t damaged on curbs.
  • Motorcycles and bicycles use caution when traveling on milled surface.

Construction Notice: Saturday Construction Work and Ongoing Site Activity

The City's contractor, W.T. Rich has received permission to extend work hours to include Saturdays, beginning Saturday, July 5, 2025. In accordance with City ordinance, Saturday work hours will be between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Perimeter site work is continuing. In the coming weeks, W.T. Rich will be installing curbing and sidewalks around the site, including along Vassal Lane. You may notice additional machinery and activity on the street during this time.
