78-80 Porter Road

In 2009, the Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA) through its Cambridge Affordable Housing Corporation (CAHC) purchased 78-8-0 Porter Road, a 26-unit rental property in Porter Square, with the financial assistance from the Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust. Additional financing was used to significantly renovate the property and convert the mostly market-rate housing units into affordable housing rented out to income-eligible residents. In the process of updating and replacing old systems, the CHA was able to maintain and restore historically significant elements of the building. Construction on the property started in January 2020 and completed in September 2021, and included construction of two fully accessible housing units.

The renovated property includes: 

  • 26 affordable rental units, including 1 one-bedroom, 9 two-bedrooms, 11 three-bedrooms, and 5 four-bedrooms, all of which are affordable in perpetuity

  • Historic preservation of the original wood trims, doors, and fireplaces

  • New electric, ventilation, and plumbing systems

  • A new roof and additional insulation
