Benefits Information for Departing Employees

Learn how your medical, dental/vision, and other benefits will be affected, when coverage ends, and what coverage you may continue after your employment ends.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) allows for the continuation of health and dental coverage. Health coverage may be continued at 102% of cost for a limited period after your coverage ends through the City.

Health Insurance

Your Health Insurance ends as of the last day of the month in which your employment ends with the City of Cambridge. Please contact the Benefits Office for information on how to extend your coverage through COBRA and to learn the cost of coverage.



Dental/Vision Insurance

Your Dental/Vision insurance ends as of the last day of the month in which your employment ends with the City of Cambridge. Please contact the Benefits Office for information on how to extend your coverage through COBRA with the Cambridge Dental Vision Fund or Teamsters Dental as applicable, or contact their offices directly.

Life Insurance

Your Life Insurance ends as of the last day of the month in which employment ends. Employees do have options to continue Group Basic and Voluntary Life insurance through Boston Mutual by porting or converting coverage. If you would like to do so, please complete the forms below and submit to the benefits office.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

Access to FSA funds ends as of the last day of employment. For expenses incurred prior to the end date of employment, an FSA claim may be submitted for reimbursement up to 90 days from the end date of employment. Any funds remaining in an account after that point will be lost.


Long-Term Disability

Your long-term disability insurance coverage ends as of your last day worked. 


Deferred Compensation

If you currently have funds with one our 457B vendors, you may contact them directly to manage your funds. As a reminder, plans are subject to required minimum distributions by a certain age. Be sure to consult with your plan for an appropriate distribution schedule for you.
