What to do if you find a wild animal that might be sick, injured or orphaned?
In almost all cases, it’s best to leave wildlife alone. Use the resources on this page to find out what to do if you think an animal needs help. If you determine that an animal needs intervention, you can contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for assistance; if any wildlife appears sick, injured or displays rabid behavior, please contact Cambridge Animal Control at 617-349-4376.
Young/Orphan Animals
Young animals may seem helpless, but often they are neither abandoned nor orphaned and don’t require assistance. Animals taken out of the wild by well-intentioned people are often subjected to more stress and have a decreased chance of survival and never having a normal life.
Moving Wildlife is Harmful, Ineffective, and Illegal
Wild animals choose habitats based on necessary resources for survival. Avoid moving them as it can cause harm or stress. Cambridge Animal Control is dedicated to rescuing sick or injured wildlife. We do not trap any wildlife considered to be a nuisance. If you are experiencing problems with wildlife, please refer to a list of licensed nuisance wildlife removal companies.
