Salt Shed Reconstruction Project

Project Image
The City of Cambridge, in partnership with Weston & Sampson, is undertaking an important improvement project at 79 Sherman Street: the replacement of the City’s aging salt shed facility. A recent study evaluating the condition and performance of the existing structure, originally built in 1990, found that the facility has reached the end of its useful life. Temporary repairs are no longer effective, and a full replacement is necessary to support safe, reliable winter operations.

The new salt shed will be designed to meet modern standards for durability, efficiency, and operational performance. Planned improvements include a strengthened foundation and base walls, increased storage capacity, improved vehicular circulation for safer and more efficient movement, and a more reliable shed door. The project will also provide updated support spaces that better meet the needs of the City's winter operations and park maintenance.

Construction Notice:  Soil Borings Scheduled at 79 Sherman Street Beginning January 12, 2026

As part of upcoming project for the Salt Shed Reconstruction Project, the City’s contractors will be collecting soil samples at 79 Sherman Street.

Soil borings will be conducted beginning on Monday, January 12, at the Salt Shed site, 79 Sherman Street. This work will have little impact on the community. The contractor will drill holes with boring rigs that extract soil samples from the earth. Holes will be repaired at the end of the testing period.

This work is expected to take approximately 5 days to complete.

What should I expect during this work?
