Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui

Sumbul Siddiqui

Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui (she/her) is serving her third term as Mayor of Cambridge, and her fifth term on the Cambridge City Council. She is the first Muslim mayor in Massachusetts, the first female mayor to serve two consecutive terms in Cambridge, and the first female to be the first elected to the City Council for four consecutive elections.

Mayor Siddiqui immigrated to the United States from Karachi, Pakistan at the age of two, along with her parents and twin brother. She was raised in Cambridge affordable housing and attended Cambridge Public Schools, graduating from Cambridge Rindge and Latin (CRLS). While a student at CRLS, Mayor Siddiqui’s passion for service and youth representation motivated her to co-found the Cambridge Youth Council. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in public policy from Brown University, Mayor Siddiqui served as an AmeriCorps fellow at New Profit, a then Cambridge-based organization dedicated to improving social mobility for families. Upon earning her J.D. from Northwestern’s Pritzker School of Law, she moved home to practice as a legal aid attorney with Northeast Legal Aid.

Throughout her tenure, Mayor Siddiqui has championed community-centered policies with a focus on economic mobility, education equity, and affordable housing. She has worked to preserve and expand affordable housing in Cambridge, secured increased city funding for legal service providers, and played a key role in major zoning reforms, including the Affordable Housing Overlay and the Multifamily Housing Zoning Ordinance. During her tenure as mayor, she launched transformative programs such as Cambridge RISE, one of the nation’s first guaranteed income pilots, which grew into a $22 million initiative providing $500 monthly payments to about 2,000 families. She also established the Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising over $5 million to support individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits. Her accomplishments also include advancing the Cambridge Preschool Program to provide free preschool for all four-year-olds, and spearheading an Early College Program, enabling high school students to earn up to two years of college credits for free.
