Nora Valdez

Journey to Empowerment

Journey to Empowerment is a space of remembrance and inspiration that connects the historical importance of women in the suffrage movement with present day women. It is composed of an oval-shaped plaza populated by figures sitting and standing. These sculptures face each other in implied conversation alongside benches and other symbolic objects.

Sculptor Nora Valdez will carve granite to create a group of modern sculptures that is sympathetic to the established site of Cambridge Common. Some figures carry historical ballot boxes while a child holds a box aloft in hope for the future. The plaza is a space for people to linger, gather, and interact. Benches encourage visitors to sit and reflect or play and climb while surrounded by historical, social, and cultural meaning.

The visual elements and symbolism are designed to create a contemplative space for reflection that will resonate with people of any age, race, experience, or educational level.
