The City of Cambridge is seeking passionate residents to join the third cohort of its Climate Action Leaders program.
These residents play a crucial role in empowering their neighbors to understand climate change and prepare for its local impacts by strengthening community resilience and fostering mutual support. The four-month program – running from September to December 2025 – includes education, resources, and funding for Leaders who host conversations in their neighborhoods to share information about City climate projects.
The overall goal is to engage underrepresented groups that aren’t always included in conversations about the environment, but are often among the most impacted by extreme weather driven by climate change. Participants receive comprehensive training on effective climate communication, learn about Cambridge's pioneering climate initiatives, and are encouraged to develop creative, community-specific events.
The impact of the Climate Action Leaders program is already evident across the city. The second cohort, active from March to June, successfully hosted diverse conversations in homes, houses of worship, and public spaces like Danehy Park. These events drew up to 40 participants of all ages, ranging from intimate book clubs to engaging teatime talks.
One Climate Action Leader facilitated a discussion where residents reviewed documents translated into Bangla on Cambridge's climate resources. They connected local waste practices to the City’s Zero Waste Master Plan, inspiring participants to organize park cleanups and educate their children about recycling.
Another Climate Action Leader brought together ten neighbors from the same street who previously hadn't known each other. Over scones and iced tea, they shared personal experiences with climate change, exchanged information on City resources and community events, and even forged new neighborhood connections, including invitations to summer barbecues. The group ultimately brainstormed actions and successfully organized a zero waste-themed block party with City grant funding.
If you are passionate about connecting your community to climate action in Cambridge and have ideas for engaging events or conversations about climate change, the City encourages you to fill out this form and join the next Climate Action Leaders cohort.
