Cambridge Community Electricity Continues to Offer Greener Energy and More Stable Prices as Eversource Rates Rise

As higher rates from Eversource take effect, the Cambridge Community Electricity Program is providing stable and competitive prices – and more renewable electricity from regional resources.

The program is a cornerstone of Cambridge's commitment to transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind. By combining the collective buying power of the City’s residents and businesses, it secures stable, long-term electricity prices while actively supporting clean energy projects. The service has proven enormously popular, with 73% of all Cambridge electric accounts participating.

What You Need To Know:

Two Cambridge Community Electricity Program options are less expensive than Eversource’s residential Basic Service. The default option for participantsStandard Greenprovides more renewable electricity from New England resources than Eversource.

Price Amount of electricity from new New England renewable resources
 Eversource's new residential Basic Service Rate  14.88 ¢/kWh  27%
 Cambridge Standard Green option 14.81 ¢/kWh  50%
 Cambridge Economy Green option  13.82 ¢/kWh  27%
 Cambridge 100% Green Plus option 16.82 ¢/kWh    100%

With the Cambridge Community Electricity Program, you decide how much green energy you want and at what price. Choose Standard Green if you want more electricity from regional renewable projects, or 100% Green Plus if you want all of your electricity from New England renewable resources. Or, select Economy Green for the lowest price, which comes with less renewable energy.

Current Cambridge Community Electricity Program prices were set under a 2-year contract that expires in January. Future savings can't be guaranteed, but the City strives to provide the lowest prices possible.

Proven Impact and Savings:

Eversource’s rates change twice a year. The Cambridge Community Electricity Program protects residents and businesses from those price swings. Since it started in 2017, it has saved Cambridge participants more than $98 million compared to Eversource's Basic Service.

Beyond savings, the program directly supports new renewable energy projects, like a solar installation at the Graham & Parks School in 2022. And the Cambridge Community Electricity Program has kept 140 million pounds of carbon emissions from contributing to climate change. That's like taking about 13,800 gas-powered cars off the roads for a year!

Check Your Bill and Learn More:

Cambridge residents and businesses are automatically enrolled in Cambridge Community Electricity’s Standard Green option. You can opt out or choose another program option anytime. There are no contracts or penalties for changing enrollment.

If you want to check your status, look at the first page of your Eversource electric bill. Under "Your electric supplier is," if you see "Cambridge Comm Elec Direct Energy," you're in the program.
