Cambridge Community Electricity to Offer More Clean Electricity and Lower Prices

Beginning in January 2026, lower electricity supply prices will take effect for all participants in Cambridge Community Electricity, the City’s electricity buying program. At the same time, most participants will receive more of their electricity from clean, renewable sources.

The program provides three consumer-friendly electricity supply options:

Standard Green – Participants in the Standard Green option will see their price lower from 14.81 ¢/kWh to 14.48 ¢/kWh. Most participants are enrolled in Standard Green. The new renewable energy in their electricity supply will increase from 50% to 75%.

100% Green – Participants in the 100% Green option, which provides electricity that is 100% from new renewable sources, will see their price lower from 16.82 ¢/kWh to 14.90 ¢/kWh.

Economy – Participants in the Economy option, which provides the minimum renewable energy required by law and the lowest price in the program, will see their prices lower from 13.82 ¢/kWh to 13.77 ¢/kWh.

All Cambridge Community Electricity prices are lower than Eversource’s upcoming residential price of 15.065 ¢/kWh.

Cambridge Community Electricity prices are fixed from January 2026 until January 2029. In contrast, Eversource’s prices change at least every six months. Because Eversource’s future prices are not known, future savings compared with Eversource cannot be guaranteed.

The new, lower prices build on the program’s history of providing value to the community. Since launching in 2017, Cambridge Community Electricity has saved Cambridge residents and businesses more than $95 million compared with Eversource's Basic Service prices. In addition, because participants in the Standard Green and 100% Green options buy more electricity from renewable sources than is required by state law, the program has helped Cambridge avoid more than 80 thousand metric tons of CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to the emissions associated with driving more than 203 million miles in a passenger vehicle.

Participants in Cambridge Community Electricity directly support the development of new renewable energy projects. All participants supported the creation of a solar project at Graham and Parks School in Cambridge.

Participants in Standard Green and 100% Green also helped enable the development of a new solar project in Illinois and a new wind project in North Dakota. Because these projects are located in electric grids where generating electricity creates more carbon emissions than in New England, these clean projects avoid more emissions than similar projects in New England.

Standard Green and 100% Green will receive renewable energy certificates from these new renewable energy projects. These certificates cost less than certificates from renewable energy projects in New England, which makes it possible for the program to increase the renewable content for participants in Standard Green even though the Standard Green price is going down.

No action is required for current Cambridge Community Electricity participants. Active program participants will be automatically enrolled into the lower price for their program option with their January 2026 meter read. New program prices will first appear on February 2026 Eversource electric bills. Program participants are free to change their option, or opt out at any time, with no fee or penalty.

To confirm you’re enrolled in Cambridge Community Electricity, check the electricity supplier listed on the front page of your bill. If it says "CAMBRIDGE COMM ELEC DIRECT ENERGY," then you are an active participant.

If you need to enroll, make changes to your enrollment, or get more information, Cambridge electricity customers are encouraged to visit the program website at CambridgeMA.gov/enrollCCE or contact customer support with the city’s program consultants at 844-379-9934

The City of Cambridge encourages Cambridge electricity customers to protect themselves from electricity scams by being suspicious of anyone who calls and asks for money, gift cards, or electricity account information over the phone, even if they say they work for Eversource. Eversource will not contact customers by phone to discuss account disconnection.
