Major Broadway Safety Project Work Begins This June

Project implementation for the Broadway Safety Improvement Project is moving ahead, and major installation activities will begin soon. Over the coming weeks, you’ll start to see more visible changes on the street as construction ramps up. Below, you’ll find important updates about the installation timeline, upcoming work, and what neighbors, businesses, and travelers can expect during construction.

Ongoing: Sidewalk Work Continues

Broadway at Ellery, Broadway at Antrim, Broadway at Elm (curb extension removal) & Broadway - Columbia to Lee St (sidewalk and pedestrian ramp improvements)

  • What: We installed a new, wider sidewalk near Ellery St. This will provide an accessible path around an existing tree. Curb extension removals at Broadway and Antrim Street have been completed. The curb extension at Broadway and Elm Street is underway.
  • When: Work will be completed by early June.
  • Impacts to Parking and Travel: Daytime parking restrictions continue, posted on street with paper signs.

See below for images depicting the changes.

Project Implementation Begins in June: Early Parking Changes and Paving Impacts Expected

  • What to Expect: Milling and Paving the length of Broadway, including the existing travel lanes and parking lanes. The City contractor will mill and pave in two sections: 1.) Columbia St to Lee St and then 2.) Lee St to Quincy St.
  • When: Round 1 of paving is expected to begin in mid-June and take 2 weeks to complete. Additional paving will occur later in summer, with work expected to be completed near the end of August. Paving marks the start of project installation.
  • Impacts to Parking and Travel: Parking changes between Columbia St and Lee St/Fayette St will begin June 8th. During paving operations, all parking will be restricted. After milling and paving are complete, parking will only be allowed on one side of Broadway according to the schedule above.
  • During this time, metal parking signs will be changing and temporary parking restrictions, indicated with paper signs, may still be in place.

The street will remain open to two-way traffic during the majority of this work, but occasional detours or driveway closures may be necessary. More information on what to expect during this time is coming soon. Access to emergency vehicles will remain open at all times.

Additional information is coming soon, including specific days and hours of work.

Project Implementation Updates Every Two Weeks or More

Starting May 18th, we’ll post and email project updates at least every two weeks. This will include specific dates and times of planned work and more information on impacts for the upcoming two-week period. Work schedules are subject to change at all times due to weather or crew availability.
