Harvard Square’s Bow Street Between DeWolfe and Plympton to Become Pedestrian Space Beginning June 18

The City of Cambridge will be piloting the pedestrianization of a one-block section of Bow Street in Harvard Square (Plympton Street to DeWolfe Street) as pedestrian-focused public space starting on Thursday, June 18. Creating this space will allow additional room for outdoor dining, gathering, and community activity near the heart of the Square.

The pedestrianization will affect a small block of Bow Street between DeWolfe Street and Plympton Street. During this period, the street will be closed to motor vehicle traffic and dedicated primarily to people walking, dining, and enjoying the public space.

The initiative supports the City’s ongoing efforts to create welcoming public spaces, strengthen Harvard Square’s business district, and provide opportunities for community activity during the outdoor dining season.

The City Council voted to authorize the pedestrianization of Bow Street following discussions about opportunities to enhance public space in Harvard Square. Businesses in the immediate area expressed support for the measure as a way to generate more activity in the space and foster a lively, inviting outdoor environment. Later this fall, the City will evaluate this pilot and determine whether the closure will continue year-round or resume seasonally.

The City has been working closely with local businesses and property owners to support the transition to a pedestrian-focused space and address operational considerations throughout the season.

In addition to expanded outdoor dining opportunities, the City will be phasing in aesthetic enhancements as well as elements that invite people to connect, play, relax, and enjoy the space.

The City will evaluate the use and performance of the pedestrian space throughout the season. Lessons learned from this year's implementation will help inform future discussions about how public spaces in Harvard Square can best support residents, visitors, and local businesses.
