Description
In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Cambridge Department of Veterans Services, the City's Office of Equity & Inclusion, and the Cambridge Commission on the Status of Women cordially invite you to attend the hybrid event, Farm Girl on the Front Lines: Deborah Sampson’s Secret. Food and light refreshments will be served.
Deborah Sampson (December 1760 - April 1827), a Massachusetts Revolutionary War heroine, disguised herself as a man and served in the Revolutionary War under the name Robert Shurtliff. She was also perhaps the first woman to lecture professionally in the United States. After her service in the war, she was later awarded a small pension by Congress on account of her war experience published in 1797 called The Female Review. In 1802, she continued to lecture on her military experiences which led Congress to pass an act providing a full military pension to her heirs in 1838.
Her story will be portrayed in-depth by Janet Parnes aka Lady J, whose work highlights women in history who have been overlooked and underappreciated, by bringing their stories to life in front of audiences. Lady J’s clients serve communities who are curious to learn about the “lesser-known” people and events that give American history its richness. Audiences discover untold “stories behind the story” and relish the opportunity to gasp, chuckle, and ah-ha!
