    • STEAM Academy: Innovators for Purpose Summer Studio

      Main Library, Community Room, 449 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02138

      Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Studio is a teen-powered design and innovation program where teens channel their energy and creative vision to imagine and build a better world. Blending art, design, science, technology and storytelling within a social justice framework, teens engage in real-world client-sponsored projects. July 5 - August 5, weekdays from 9:15am-3:30pm at the Main Library Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Program. The Cambridge Public Library STEAM Academy is part Cambridge STEAM Initiative's efforts to enhance and expand students’ access to quality STEAM learning experiences. Made possible by generous support from the Eric and Jane Nord Family Fund and Verizon.

    • Summer Reading: Neighborhood Bird Watching (O'Neill)

      O'Neill Branch, 70 Rindge Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140

      All ages are welcome to join us as we observe birds right outside the O'Neill Branch. As we explore the urban outdoors, we will discuss birdwatching tips, how to identify an unfamiliar bird and learn a little bit more about the birds we share our outdoor spaces with. No registration required. Binoculars are recommended but not required. A limited supply of binoculars will be available for use during the program.       Step into the Hive's state-of-the-art recording studio and film a short video of yourself in front of our green screen. Then, spend some time becoming familiar with video editing software while working with your footage. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop. Registration is required.

    • CPL PARK SOUNDS: Soulelujah and Albino Mbie Trio

      Bring a blanket or a chair and join us in Joan Lorentz Park for an evening of Park Sounds! Started in 2003 in Central Square, Soulelujah expanded to a new home at The Sinclair in Harvard Square in 2018. This strictly vinyl party sticks mostly to the 7 inch format, although you may see a few LP's from time to time. Join resident DJ Johnny Stevens as he brings the best in known and unknown Soul, Funk, and R&B music. Albino Mbie is an award winning musician, guitarist, singer, composer, sound and mixing engineer born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. His music incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Afro-Pop and Moz-Jazz sound. Mbie released his first album, Mozambican Dance, in 2013 with 12 original compositions with musicians from 16 countries. This program is supported by the Cambridge Public Library Foundation and is hosted in memory of Janet Axelrod. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be held in the Lecture Hall.

      Learn how to use our Epilog Zing—an industry-standard laser cutting machine. Complete this workshop to earn a badge for the Zing laser cutter. With a badge, you can reserve the Epilog Zing to use on our equipment booking page at designated times. Note: The Epilog Zing laser cutter and Glowforge laser cutter require separate trainings. You must participate in the Glowforge workshop in order to operate our Glowforge Pro laser cutter. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.
