Marc McGovern is a fifth generation Cantabrigian and father of four, currently serving his seventh term on the Cambridge City Council. Over the course of his public service, he has also served two terms as Vice Mayor and one term as Mayor, in addition to four terms on the Cambridge School Committee.
He was raised in a family that valued civic engagement and community involvement, an upbringing that shaped his understanding of public service as both a responsibility and a privilege. Those early influences continue to guide his approach to local government, where he is known for his steady leadership and collaborative style.
In addition to his elected roles, Councillor McGovern has spent more than 30 years working as a social worker with children and families navigating complex challenges. That professional experience informs his perspective and has grounded his policy work in the day-to-day realities facing many residents.
On the Council, he has focused on issues affecting the most vulnerable members of the community, including income insecurity, affordable housing, homelessness, hunger, and immigrant rights. He has consistently emphasized practical solutions and long-term investments that strengthen the social and economic fabric of the city.
Councillor McGovern places a high value on constituent services, holding a weekly office hour and remaining accessible and responsive to residents seeking assistance, whether with individual concerns or broader community issues.
