Weights and Measures

The Department of Weights & Measures enforces all laws related to measuring devices used by local business establishments, such as taxi meters, gas station pumps, home heating oil truck meters, hospital, clinic, truck, factory, and pharmacy scales. The Department works to ensure that equity prevails between buyer and seller within the City of Cambridge.

How to Start

If you visited an establishment in Cambridge that you believe has a faulty measuring device or improperly conducts business related to the weight and subsequent amount charged for goods, you can file a complaint. 

  • Try to collect as much information as available. For example, if you are:
    • in supermarket and there is a problem with a scale, try to get the registration number or be aware of the location of the scale
    • at a gas pump, note the pubmp number and particular grade of gas, address of establishment, and any information that you might think is pertinent.
