Cambridge Commemorates Martin Luther King Day with Exhibit, Events, and MLK Day of Service and Learning

The City of Cambridge is hosting an exhibit and two events to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Additionally, Many Helping Hands is hosting MLK Day of Service:

Visions of a Dream: Autistic Artists Interpret Martin Luther King Jr., an exhibit at Cambridge Public Library, 449 Broadway
Korean and American artists on the autism spectrum produce their renditions of Martin Luther King Jr. according to their personal style and approach.
Note: This exhibit can be seen on L2 during other scheduled programming and events through January 20. Learn more.

Exhibit director Heyon Choi will present a lecture and workshop Saturday, January 13, from 1-3 p.m., in the Community Room of Cambridge Public Library, on exploring neurodiversity through artistic expression. This informal workshop invites patrons to view the art exhibit along the L2 hallway, meet the exhibit director, and create crafts inspired by the exhibit. Registration for this event is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. Register for this event.

Martin Luther King Day Commemoration & Remembrance Monday, January 15, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 838 Massachusetts Ave.
The City of Cambridge will honor and remember Dr. King and his legacy as we hear from members of the Cambridge community share readings of Dr. King’s words calling for peace, justice and transformation and musical performances -- including one by gospel soloist Christina DeVaughn. Organized by the Cambridge Peace Commission, this year's program will include greetings from Mayor E. Denise Simmons and remarks by Rev. Lorraine Thornhill, Lead Pastor of the Kingdom Empowerment Center in Cambridge. From 12:45 - 2 p.m., an Informal lunch and community gathering will be held in the undercroft (basement) at St. Peter’s. Learn more about this event. The City of Cambridge will honor and remember Dr. King and his legacy, as we gather at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church to hear members of the Cambridge community share readings of Dr. King’s words calling for peace, justice and transformation, as well as musical performances -- including by gospel soloist Christina DeVaughn. 11 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.  Celebration of Dr. King’s Life and Work for Peace, Justice, and Transformation.

14th Annual Cambridge MLK Day of Service and Learning
Monday January 15, 2-5 p.m. in Central Square
Come honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy by joining with others for an afternoon of hands-on service projects to benefit Cambridge and Somerville residents in need.
2 p.m.           Welcome and Gathering at Central Square Church, 5 Magazine St., Cambridge, where Rev. King preached in 1960.
2:30 p.m.     Walk as a Community to our 3 locations: Cambridge City Hall (795 Mass Ave), YWCA, (7 Temple St) and the Senior Center (806 Mass Ave), for hands-on service projects:
2:30-5 p.m.  Hands-On Service Projects - make blankets, scarves, Valentines, and sort clothing, books, and food.

Please Don’t Come Empty Handed.
We encourage you to bring an item of non-perishable food, a children's book, gently used winter clothing, or new warm socks which we will sort as a community to deliver to our more than 70 organizations serving those in need in our community.

Stay safe. We will offer masks at each location. And, as part of our mission to be more sustainable, we also ask that you bring your own water bottle. Come alone, with friends, family, or as a group. When you register, there is an option to sign up a group of 10 or more, and sign up for a food, book, or clothing drive.

Cambridge Public Library to Welcome Professor Randall Kennedy for 49th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Lecture
Tuesday, January 16, at 6 p.m., Cambridge Public Library Lecture Hall, 449 Broadway.
Registration is Required

Every January, the Library welcomes a thought leader to deliver a lecture to honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and impart the importance of continuing his work. Martin Luther King Jr.’s belief in community service and equity for all aligns with the Library’s vision to create a Cambridge where everyone has equitable opportunities to learn, people live their best lives, and democracy thrives. This event is hybrid, and registration is required. This event is cosponsored by the Cambridge Public Library Foundation, the City Manager’s Office, and Mayor Denise Simmons. Learn more.
