About 4 Mellen Street

4 Mellen Street will provide 29 new, affordable, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments in the Baldwin neighborhood. The development involved the preservation and conversion of an existing historic building, the Charles Saunders House, into four affordable apartments and the new construction of a rear addition, built to meet Passive House standards, containing 25 affordable apartments. The 4 Mellen Street housing will include features to ensure maximum energy efficiency such as robust insulation, highly efficient HVAC systems, and ecofriendly materials and will be entirely electric. In addition to the new housing, HRI will be retaining the landscaped front yard and making additional improvements along the edges of the site, including small sitting areas, improved landscaping and lighting, and passive open space.

HRI has developed this income-restricted apartment building with funding from the City of Cambridge and the Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust. This project was developed under the provisions of the Affordable Housing Overlay (AHO)
