Did you know that more fires occur on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year?
Most of these fires start as kitchen fires. Nationally, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and a leading cause of fire injuries.
In the City of Cambridge on Thanksgiving Day 2024, Fire Companies responded to and extinguished 12 fires in stoves and ovens!
This compares to the "normal" daily average of three.
"Enjoy the special time with family and friends, but always pay attention to what's happening in the kitchen. An unattended fire in the kitchen can spread very quickly." says Acting Fire Chief Tom Cahill.
“Thanksgiving is a hectic holiday with multiple dishes cooking and baking at the same time, along with guests, entertaining, and other distractions that can make it easy to lose sight of what’s on the stove or in the oven,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.
Keep your kitchen and your home Fire Safe on Thanksgiving!
