In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class. Registration is prioritized for patrons who will directly benefit from interpretation in American Sign Language. Please email thehive@cambridgema.gov to register. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.

All cannabis businesses, including Marijuana Treatment Centers (MTC), as defined in the Cannabis Business Permit Ordinance, require a Cannabis Business Permit from Cambridge Inspectional Services Department (ISD) before opening. This city permit is different from the state Marijuana License application that is managed by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (MA CCC). Before the MA CCC issues a final Marijuana License, they will request a copy of your Cannabis Business Permit.

Join us for a lively discussion of a great book in person at the Main Library! Pizza will be provided. For ages 7-10 and a parent or caregiver. This month's book is Hoops by Matt Tavares, a historical fiction graphic novel follows the story of a girl’s basketball team in the 1970’s as they fight for the same treatment that the boy’s team receives. Both caregiver and child should read the book before the discussion to participate. Registration is required — only one registration is needed per family. Join the Collins Branch Library in collaboration with the Cambridge Climate Leaders Initiative for a monthly discussion of a climate-related topic. Each month the group will discuss a book on the topic at hand then hear about a related local program or initiative and how you can take action. Join the LUCE Immigration Justice Network of Massachusetts to learn how to respond to immigration enforcement in your community. LUCE volunteers will cover bystanders’ rights when witnessing immigration enforcement, as well as how to identify potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity and how to safely engage. You will also learn more about LUCE and how their statewide hotline works. This is a hybrid event. A Zoom link will be sent to all registered online participants 1 hour before the event. Interpretation services are available to online attendees by request in a number of languages. To request interpretation, please indicate your language needs on the registration form by Tuesday, March 31st. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Sending humans to Mars is hard. Bringing them back safely is even harder. Doing so while also having them perform cutting-edge science and exploration during the mission? A major challenge. Luckily, we can plan and test parts of our future Mars missions before we leave the ground. In this session, we discuss the design and completion of two analog (Earth-based, Mars simulation) missions: Project MADMEN and Pale Red Dot. Come experience life on Mars as we traverse rocky terrain for geology and astrobiology experiments, test different cooking methods to make Martian meals, and navigate emergencies in space. Ever wanted to be an astronaut? This is your chance to experience life on “Mars”!

Parking is available at Alewife MBTA station or limited on-street parking on Cambridgepark Drive. No registration is required.
