Abating Reality: Mystery/Thriller/Sci-Fi Book Group (Central Square/Virtual)

Summer Reading: Springfield Symphony Orchestra's Musical Petting Zoo (Main)
Here’s your chance to try an instrument in a judgment-free zone that encourages exploration and excitement! After an introduction to the instruments, participants get a chance to bow a violin, blow a horn or tap out a rhythm on a drum. Recommended for children of all ages and their caregivers. Funding for Summer Reading has been generously provided by the City of Cambridge, Cambridge Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Cambridge Public Library.
Family STEAM Night: "Adventure of the Missing Color" (O'Neill)
Families with elementary school-age children join us for hands-on activities focused on Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering and Math. Adults and children will learn and play together! In December, Science Heroes will present "Adventure of the Missing Color!" Through hands-on experiments and fun, interactive stories, kids will get excited about the science that’s all around us as we celebrate the scientists who color our world with art! Phillis Wheatley Day Celebration (Main)
Please join the Library in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the publication of Phillis Wheatley's poems with a poetry reading and workshop. Organized by the poet Artress Bethany White—the co-editor of Wheatley at 250: Black Women Poets Re-imagine the Verse of Phillis Wheatley Peters—this event will open with an African drumming prelude, followed by a presentation on Wheatley's life and work as well as a reading by contemporary poets inspired by Wheatley and collected in Wheatley at 250, and concluding with a short writing exercise designed to engage the audience with Wheatley's poems.
Mental Health First Aid (Main)
Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training that teaches people how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge in adults ages 18 and over. The program is designed to build mental health literacy, providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental health or substance use challenge. This workshop will cover: Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges How to interact with a person in crisis How to connect a person with help Expanded content on trauma, substance use and self-care Registration is required.
Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy (Main/Virtual)
To mark the 250th anniversaries of the American Revolution and the founding of the United States, a coalition of local non-profits and government agencies will present Washington in American Memory, a seven-part speaker series. Retrace George Washington’s post-inaugural journeys and explore how he sought to unite a fragile new nation, featuring: Peter Drummey, Chief Historian of the Massachusetts Historical Society (Ret.) Nathaniel Philbrick, author of Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy, along with many other New York Times bestselling books
Summer Reading: Observing the Partial Solar Eclipse with #Popscope (O'Neill)
Join us during the partial solar eclipse and learn how to safely observe it! Eclipse glasses will be provided. Participants will also have the chance to explore a walkable model of the solar system and create a related craft. This program will happen outside. In case of bad weather, this program will happen inside the Peabody School gym Funding for Summer Reading has been generously provided by the City of Cambridge, Cambridge Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Cambridge Public Library and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
