In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class. Registration is prioritized for patrons who will directly benefit from interpretation in American Sign Language. Please email thehive@cambridgema.gov to register. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.

Join us for a lively discussion of a great book in person at the Main Library! Pizza will be provided. For ages 7-10 and a parent or caregiver. This month's book is Hoops by Matt Tavares, a historical fiction graphic novel follows the story of a girl’s basketball team in the 1970’s as they fight for the same treatment that the boy’s team receives. Both caregiver and child should read the book before the discussion to participate. Registration is required — only one registration is needed per family. The Cambridge Water Department (CWD) wants to make the Cambridge community aware of the latest water drought status. Last week, the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) changed the Cambridge drought level status to Level 2 (Significant Drought). In response to the ongoing drought, Cambridge has implemented strict water use restrictions.

On October 22, the Department of Public Works (DPW) presented nine strategies to City Council’s Health & Environment Committee on draft changes to improve on the City’s waste programs. The draft strategies are part of the City’s updated Zero Waste Master Plan (ZWMP), and the City seeks feedback from all Cambridge stakeholders by November 30, 2024.

As COVID-19 vaccination efforts continue to ramp up in the Commonwealth, we are working to match both clinical and non-clinical volunteers to vaccination sites where they can offer important assistance based on site specific needs We are also building lists of potential volunteers to maximize overall response efforts.
