In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop. If you have not completed the training, you will be removed from the class—even if you plan to take it later. The City of Cambridge stands in solidarity with our Haitian and Syrian communities following today’s Supreme Court ruling affecting Temporary Protected Status. We recognize the deep concern and anxiety that many families are likely experiencing as they face losing temporary protections that have allowed them to live, work, and thrive in our city, state, and country.

This CPR class will cover life-saving skills for infants, children and adults. We will use multi-media and hands-on practice to be sure students acquire skills and confidence to assist in a life-saving medical situation. This class will also cover training and the use of AED (Automated External Defibrillator) for all ages, along with life-saving skills in choking situations. Students will receive their certificate upon completion of class. Please note that the City is not responsible for the content or training equipment. Space is limited (25 adults), registration is required. Note for CONFIRMED registrants: Your spot is held until the program start time. Once the program begins, we will fill in open spots from a day-of waiting list until the program reaches capacity. The Department of Transportation’s free adult bike workshops help participants build confidence and develop safe riding skills in a supportive environment. Programs include Learn to Bike for beginners, Road Readiness for riders looking to improve their skills, and On-Road Skills for adults interested in gaining confidence riding on city streets. Workshops are free, open to adults, and include the use of bicycles and helmets.
