Don’t think you have what it takes to use a sewing machine? Think again! In this FREE workshop, teens from the Cambridge Community Art Center will teach you how to properly thread a machine, sew a straight stitch, hem and unfinished edge, and secure your stitches. Practice by sewing colorful shapes onto small flags. Following the workshop, the flags will be made into a banner and displayed at the Library. No experience necessary. Come to the playground in your pajamas to listen to stories, read with your children and enjoy a snack before bed! This program is recommended for children of all ages and their caregivers. This summer Pajama Story Time will happen outside in the playground area at the Fresh Pond Apartments. In case of bad weather, the story time will happen inside the Community Room of 362 Rindge Ave. Pajama Story Time is presented by the Cambridge Public Library and the Center for Families.

Join us at the Central Square Branch for a screening of documentary film, Sunú. Seen through the eyes of small, midsize and large Mexican maize producers, SUNÚ knits together different stories from a threatened rural world. This film documents how people realize their determination to stay free, to work the land and cultivate their seeds, to be true to their cultures and forms of spirituality, all in a modern world where corn is being threatened at the center of its origin: Mexico. Popcorn and movie snacks provided.

The Cambridge Community Learning Center (CLC), which provides free job training and educational classes to adult learners, received 360 digital devices through MBI's Connected and Online Program. Additionally, the Cambridge Public Library announced Tech for All in March, a program funded through MBI’s Municipal Digital Equity Implementation Program and the Cambridge Public Library Foundation. Through Tech for All, 68 refurbished laptops and 83 mobile Wi-Fi hotspots were distributed to eligible Library patrons, funded by the Cambridge Public Library Foundation.

This meeting seeks to provide an important opportunity for residents impacted by the May 11th Memorial Drive shooting to connect, process, voice thoughts and concerns, and begin to heal. Members of the Cambridge Police Department will be on hand to provide an overview of the event, explain the emergency response, and outline what to expect from the investigation and court process. Representatives from the Mayor's Office, Cambridge Public Health and the Riverside Trauma Center will also be available to share information on how community members can seek any support services.

Join us for a guided 60-minute art tour featuring public artwork in East Cambridge and learn about how Cambridge Arts commissions and maintains art for public enjoyment. We will visit three public artworks, and two sidewalk poems. Meet at Centanni Park between the Multicultural Arts Center and the Middlesex South Registry of Deeds. This event is part of our Time Out for Public Art series in collaboration with Cambridge Arts. In October, these will be 60-minute art tours where we visit multiple sites as a group. Registration is required.

The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) is working to create a more equitable afterschool application and enrollment process while expanding access for Cambridge families. For the 2024-2025 school year, 1,486 students received an offer to a DHSP afterschool program, with 90% placed in their first choice, and a 7% increase in applicants from the income priority group. DHSP has also added 246 new seats across programs, launched an OST Expansion Study to support long-term growth, and continues to center caregiver perspectives through the Caregiver Council.

The City of Cambridge Department of Veterans Services will host a Veterans Day Observance event on Saturday, November 11, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m., at Cambridge Common. A Veterans Appreciation Week will be held November 13-17, at the Veterans' Life and Recreation Center, 51 Inman Street, 2nd floor, Cambridge. events will provide an opportunity for veterans and their loved ones to gather and participate in health, wellness, and other fun and interactive activities. Free food and refreshments will also be available each day from 12-4 p.m.
