World Portuguese Language Day is celebrated every year in May. It is a celebration shared by millions around the world, including among the vast and important Portuguese speaking communities in Massachusetts. Portuguese is a global language, spoken by millions in different continents, and it is one of the most spoken languages in Massachusetts. Join us for an afternoon of celebration with the music of Portugal, Cape Verde, and Brazil, followed by light refreshments. Performers at the event include Mia Tomé, accompanied by Zé Manel Cavaco from Portugal; Vuca Pinheiro and Nhela Sax from Cape Verde; and the Trio Alma Brasileira from Brazil. The event is organized by the Consulates General of Portugal, Cape Verde, and Brazil, with the support of Camoes, Institute for Cooperation and Language, and in partnership with the Cambridge Public Library.

Join us for a weaving workshop with Katherine Santos, a member of the Choctaw-Apache Tribe and Librarian for American Indigenous Studies at Harvard’s Fine Arts Library. We will explore how weaving and storytelling intersect for many Indigenous nations in the United States and learn the history behind weaving materials used on this land for millennia. With Santos’s guidance, participants will practice foundational weaving techniques in community with one another. All materials will be provided. Recommended for youth ages 8 and up. This program can accommodate 25 weavers. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis on the day of the program. The entire party must be present to receive a ticket. Harvard Book Store and the Cambridge Public Library welcome Angela Buchdahl—Senior Rabbi of Central Synagogue in New York City and the first Asian American to be ordained as a rabbi—for a discussion of her memoir Heart of a Stranger: An Unlikely Rabbi's Story of Faith, Identity, and Belonging. She will be joined in conversation by Allegra Goodman—local author of the bestselling novels Isola and The Chalk Artist. Registration is required.
