Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot Recommended for Some Groups
A booster shot is an extra dose of a vaccine that can help 'boost' the immune system to better protect against disease. COVID-19 vaccines work very well to protect against serious illness and death. However, protection against more moderate disease may decrease over time. Recent research shows that a Pfizer COVID-19 booster shot strengthens the immune response in people who had had their second Pfizer shot at least 6 months earlier.
Avoid Contact with Alewife Brook Through May 23 Due to Potential Harmful Bacteria and Other Pollutants
People and pets should avoid contact with Alewife Brook and parts of the Mystic River due to the release of stormwater mixed with sewage into the river. The release of mixed stormwater and sewage—known as a “combined sewer overflow (CSO)”—is needed to prevent contaminated water from backing up into homes, businesses, and city streets.
Cambridge Mosquito Sample Tests Positive for West Nile Virus
State health officials reported on July 9 that a mosquito sample in Cambridge had tested positive for West Nile virus. The virus is usually transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The risk of West Nile virus infection in Cambridge remains “low,” according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Low risk means an infection of West Nile virus is unlikely.

Small Business Compost Program Expansion
Beginning November 1, 2022, commercial generators that produce more than 1,000 lbs of food waste per week will be required to reduce or divert their food waste going into the trash. To assist small businesses in Cambridge with this state regulation, the service and carts will be provided by the city at no cost to the participating businesses. Weekly collection is anticipated to start on October 24, 2022.
