As part of a national celebration of Public Works Week, the Department of Public Works (DPW) Commissioner Kathy Watkins and other City officials recently honored the recipients of the 2023 Commissioner’s Award for Outstanding Performance.

Learn how set up your smartphone (iPhone or Android), how to adapt your phone to your needs (brightness, font size), common gestures and symbols and how to connect to the internet. This class will be delivered by a DOORS program instructor. “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” is in order of importance. It is better to reduce than reuse; better to reuse than recycle. Reducing and reusing prevent the environmental impact of making new items. All disposal has financial costs to the city. Recycling and composting cost the City less than trash. Still, preventing waste in the first place is best for Cambridge and the environment. It is one of the key recommendations in the Cambridge Zero Waste Master Plan.

The City of Cambridge and the State of Massachusetts have a shared goal of reducing our production of climate-change-causing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by the year 2050. As part of these efforts, the Cambridge City Council passed the Green Jobs Ordinance in 2023 to connect Cambridge residents to green jobs and training. The Cambridge Public Art Commission helps guide the implementation of the Public Art Ordinance and the Art Gifts and Donation Policy, and advises on the overall direction of the City of Cambridge’s Public Art Program.

Come to the Library to create something special! Use your own supplies or try out our equipment! You can use our 1-inch button maker, 2.5 inch button maker, 3-D Doodle pens, or Janome sewing machines. The Library will provide basic supplies. This drop-in program is for people who feel comfortable using these machines on their own. The Library will not provide instruction. Anyone wishing to use the sewing machines must have completed a Sewing 101 training through the Library. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

This new program is aimed at protecting the health of our local rivers and reducing street flooding. Residents and business owners are encouraged to participate by claiming a storm drain in their neighborhood and keeping it clear of debris, particularly ahead of rain events. With 5,800 City owned storm drains in Cambridge, the task of maintaining them is substantial. City crews work diligently to clear storm drains before and after storms, but this task can be completed more quickly with community assistance.
