An overview message from the City Manager outlining the budget process, the City's financial stability and the importance of transparency on how we spend our money

The Budget process for Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) began in the fall of 2022. This was the first Budget that I have prepared for the City of Cambridge since becoming City Manager. It was an amazing honor to lead that process, and much success is owed to the dedicated city leaders, teams, and staff members, who work incredibly hard everyday to maintain and build a stronger, more equitable and thriving City.

Facing federal funding uncertainty, Cambridge adds millions to stabilize key services and launch new housing vouchers for unhoused residents.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is installing 200 new fully enclosed BigBelly bins starting in September 2025 to combat rodent activity and prevent litter. These new bins, which include both trash and recycling stations, will replace almost all of the open-top trash cans currently in the city.

Participatory Budgeting is a democratic process that empowers community members to decide how to spend part of a public budget. In June and July 2022, community members submitted 1,320 ideas on how to spend $1 million of the City of Cambridge’s FY24 Capital Budget. From August to November, over 70 volunteer PB Delegates worked on five committees to research and evaluate those ideas and develop 20 final proposals for the PB ballot.
