Science and Conservation
Our public art collection reflects the growth of technology that continues to expand the contemporary artist's palette, which can include different metal alloys, plastics, paint, glass, water, or new media. Through our applied science practice we assist that exploration of new public art materials, and research best conservation materials for treatment and care.
Mission to Mars: How to Eat, Sleep and Think Like an Astronaut (Main)
Sending humans to Mars is hard. Bringing them back safely is even harder. Doing so while also having them perform cutting-edge science and exploration during the mission? A major challenge. Luckily, we can plan and test parts of our future Mars missions before we leave the ground. In this session, we discuss the design and completion of two analog (Earth-based, Mars simulation) missions: Project MADMEN and Pale Red Dot. Come experience life on Mars as we traverse rocky terrain for geology and astrobiology experiments, test different cooking methods to make Martian meals, and navigate emergencies in space.
Ever wanted to be an astronaut? This is your chance to experience life on “Mars”!
CPL Arts: Voices in Collage; Celebrating Women's History (Main)
In honor of Women’s History Month, this collage workshop invites participants to explore collage as a practice rooted in storytelling, care, and reclamation. Together, we will look at how women and femmes have historically used cutting, layering, assemblage, and repair as forms of documentation and self expression, often working outside traditional art spaces and definitions of what is understood to be "fine art.”
Participants will create collages using photographs, found papers, textiles, and personal ephemera, reflecting on lineage, memory, and the quiet labor of the women that shapes our lives. No prior collage experience is necessary. This workshop is designed as a welcoming, reflective space where participants are encouraged to work intuitively, honor their own histories, and engage with material in a tactile, intentional way. All are welcome.
Registration is required.
