Over 1,000 households submitted applications for the City's new cash assistance program, Rise Up Cambridge, within the first 24 hours following the launch of the application period on June 1. This response represents approximately 50% of eligible families in Cambridge, highlighting the strong demand and support for this program within the community.

For four decades, Johnisha Matthews Levi believed a conventional story about her birth, picturing her happy parents at the hospital together. While sorting through her late mother's belongings, however, she discovered a document indicating that her father was instead serving time in Lorton Correctional Complex. This revelation, along with rumors about an FBI investigation of her deceased parents' "private business," leads Levi to unearth the hidden history of her family. She ties this story to public policy, demonstrating how state lottery legalization and the War on Drugs disrupted the Black institutions and communities in Washington, DC. Registration is required.

The City is pleased to release the 2020 Canopy Assessment completed by the University of Vermont, which shows that the implementation of the Urban Forestry Master Plan is improving our tree canopy. Building canopy is a slow and steady race, but we are seeing substantive progress. The investments in tree plantings and maintenance combined with tree preservation initiatives are reversing the loss of tree canopy.

The Department of Public Works and Adius Arts Initiative are presenting the fourth annual Arts in the Park event on Saturday, September 27, 2025, as part of a continued celebration of local art and The Port Infrastructure Improvements Project currently underway. On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, leaders from the City of Cambridge and the Commonwealth gathered with nonprofit Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH) to mark the beginning of renovations at the former Sacred Heart church rectory and school in East Cambridge. By the end of 2027, POAH plans to complete construction on the property, which will create 46 new permanently affordable apartment homes.

Climbing one of the play structures or otherwise exploring the Louis A. DePasquale Universal Design Playground at Danehy Park, you’ll spot pictures by Dominic Killiany, a prolific 24-year-old artist living with autism. Panels throughout the park reproduce his brightly colored paintings of Boston’s Zakim Bridge, street signs, fish, a lion, zebra, elephant and giraffes.
