This year, National Public Health Week is April 3-9. The observance serves to promote awareness and celebrate the work of public health. But what exactly is public health work? You may be aware of public health’s role with COVID-19, but did you know that the work is much more extensive? Public health is about protecting the health of an entire population. For the Cambridge Public Health Department, that means all people who live, learn, work, play, or spend time in Cambridge. Curbside collection of trash, recycling, compost, and yard waste will be one day behind schedule for the remainder of that week. Street cleaning will also be suspended on the holiday and the makeup street cleaning day will be Wednesday, July 10 for streets that would normally have been swept on the first Thursday of the month.

A site-based assessment team from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive on Monday, August 18th through Thursday, August 21st to examine all aspects of the Cambridge Police Department policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that the Cambridge Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence. As part of the assessment agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments by calling (617) 349-3384.
