Join us for a lively discussion of a great book in person at the Main Library! Snacks will be provided. For ages 7-10 and a parent or caregiver. This month's book is Garlic and the Vampire, by Bree Paulsen. Garlic is perfectly happy living in her little vegetable community with her best friend Carrot and the Witch Agnes to take care of them. But when a vampire moves into the big spooky castle on the hill, everyone agrees Garlic is the only one who can go confront him! Copies of this month's book are available at the Children's Desk. Both caregiver and child should read the book before the discussion to participate. Registration is required — only one registration is needed per family. Young people ages 10 to 14 who love to write are welcome to share their ideas and writing. There will be time for share-outs/workshopping, as well as group or solo writing. Snacks are provided! This week we will be joined by guest author Patrick Joyce, author of Back in the USSR and Strawberry Fields. If you are attending for the first time, registration is helpful, but not required.

Youth ages 10+ are welcome to join us for a single session of cooperative storytelling and role-play table-top game Dungeons & Dragons. Youth who have never played are encouraged to Try it!, youth with DnD experience are welcome. No registration required. The following description is for the program that will be on Saturday: Join friends at the O'Neill Branch to build, build, BUILD your idea of a neighborhood and a community! Let your imagination run wild with LEGOs, Magna-Tiles and other building toys. We will also have books about neighborhoods and a collaborative art project about our community. For children ages 5 and up. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by a caregiver. LEGO pieces are choking hazards for young children.

Children and families can join us for an outdoor story time and short walk at Alewife Brook Reservation. We will meet at the seating area on the bike path near the Alewife Brook Pathway and DCR Wetland Boardwalk: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CC32nJqG1Xk3b5zDA. There is no parking available on-site. Parking is available at Alewife MBTA station or limited on-street parking on Cambridgepark Drive. No registration is required. Join us for our Halloween celebration with a special appearance from Professor Bugman! His "Spooky Bones and Creepy Crawlies" program focuses on comparative skeletal anatomy. We will handle and pass around real animal bones, skulls and skeletons while talking about what bones are, what they do, and how to tell them apart, and learning more about the animal they came from. Then, we'll dive in and compare this to the exoskeletons of arthropods, focusing on a selection of our creepier bugs. Prof. Bugman will begin at 4:30. Treats provided and costumes encouraged! This program is for children and their caregivers.

Learn about the structure of the plants we eat from root to fruit and what portions of different plants are or are not edible. Recommended for ages 5 and up.
