Darning is a fabric mending technique that involves reinforcing or re-weaving a portion of fabric by hand. In this workshop, we’ll learn how to visibly mend holes and weak areas in sweaters, socks, and other knit fabrics using seed stitch and square darning techniques. You’ll leave with a sampler of both techniques that you can refer back to when tackling your own darning projects at home. Suitable for beginners with little or no darning experience, though it does help if you have some experience with hand sewing.

Treat yourself to an afternoon of fun, creativity, and community while a local artist guides us step-by-step through the process of painting a beautiful art piece, suitable for hanging on your door or wall. Tea and light refreshments provided. No experience necessary. All are welcome. Old clothing recommended, as acrylic paint can stain. Seating is limited to 8. Registration is required and will open November 24.

Party like you just got your first library card! All Kindergartners, along with their families and friends, are welcome to attend. We will have activities, crafts and snacks.

Our monthly Middle Grade Mystery book group is for kids aged 10-14. The climate is changing, and we're all here on the planet together. Join us for a monthly community gathering and discussion of a variety of books about climate change. We will share thoughts, resources, and occasionally host special guests in a welcoming small-group environment. For our April meeting, we will discuss Here comes the sun: a last chance for the climate and a fresh chance for civilization by Bill McKibben. Copies of the print book are available at the Main Library Q&A Desk. The e-book is available on the Libby app and the e-audiobook is available immediately on the Hoopla app. This is a hybrid event. Children and families are invited to meet Jasmine Warga, award-winning and best-selling author of many popular middle-grade novels, including Massachusetts Children's Book Award winner A Rover’s Story and Newbery Honor winner Other Words for Home. Warga will talk about her work, answer questions from the audience and sign books. Porter Square Books will have books available for sale. Recommended for ages 8 and up. Registration is not required. Join us outdoors for story time, chalk drawing and a special summer treat! This program will take place in the Central Square Library Plaza. In the event of rain, this program will be moved indoors to the Lewis Room. No registration required. Recommended for children of all ages and their caregivers.

In honor of Earth Day, spend your afternoon at the Library creating your own terrarium. In partnership with Emerald City Plant Shop, you will have the opportunity to learn more about different kind of plants and plant care. This event will be conducted in the front park area of the Library. In the case of rain, the class will be moved to the community room. The Library will provide needed supplies.

Join us for a lively discussion of a great book in person at the Main Library! Snacks will be provided. For ages 7-9 and a parent or caregiver. This month's book is Charlie and Frog by Karen Kane. Charlie’s boring summer gets a lot more interesting when he sees a mysterious woman who gives him a desperate message (in American Sign Language) and then disappears. Luckily, local girl detective Francine (Frog) has been looking for her next case, and ASL is her first language. They’ll have to work together to decipher clues and find ways to communicate and solve the mystery before it’s too late! Copies of this month's book are available at the Children's Desk. Sacred Songs and Rituals brings Kendra Comstock, soprano, and Charles Iner, lute, to explore Catholic persecution during the English Renaissance and the forms of secret musical resistance Catholic musicians created during this time. Sacred Songs and Rituals is a Cambridge Public Library music series celebrating the divine in the many cultures found in Cambridge.
