Transition Wellness Center
The Transition Wellness Center (TWC), a temporary homeless shelter at the Spaulding Hospital, opened on December 16 following the closure of the temporary emergency shelter at the War Memorial Recreation Center. The shelter is intended to help address the urgent needs of Cambridge residents who are experiencing homelessness or unable to safely quarantine in their residence due to the COVID-19 public health emergency.
Pilot Program
CitySmart began as a pilot program to test how social marketing affects transportation choices. We hoped to shift approximately 10% of single-occupant vehicle trips to more sustainable modes, such as walking, bicycling and transit.
Summer Reading: Ed Popielarczyk's Comedy Magic (O'Connell)
Ed Popielarczyk is a professional magician, balloon twister and entertainer who has been entertaining children and family audiences for over 40 years. His magic show is a comedy show that uses a lot of audience participation. The kids are the stars of the show. This program is recommended for children of all ages and their caregivers. No registration required. Funding for Summer Reading has been generously provided by the City of Cambridge, Cambridge Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Cambridge Public Library.
Time Out for Public Art Tactile Talks: Yerxa Road Underpass
Join us for a guided 30-minute Tactile Talk featuring artist Randal Thurston’s transformation of a once-dark tunnel into a welcoming passageway with painted steel silhouettes and textured tilework. We will meet at the corner of Yerxa Road and Pemberton Street. This event is part of our Time Out for Public Art series in collaboration with Cambridge Arts. In September, these will be Tactile Talks, shorter visits perfect for all ages and abilities. Registration is required.
Community Safety Meeting
This meeting is part of the Mayor’s ongoing commitment to keeping the public informed about efforts to ensure community safety. We will provide updates on the investigations into the shootings that occurred earlier this summer and share information about the City’s continued initiatives to reduce violence. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, and engage in dialogue. This meeting aims to foster community involvement in identifying and implementing effective strategies to decrease violence and enhance safety in our city.

Professor Bugman: Spooky Bones and Creepy Crawlies (Central Square)
Explore bones and meet real-live creepy crawlies in this science-based program with entomology expert, Professor Bugman! Registration is required for this program. Please register each child attending the program (adults do not have to register themselves). For questions, please contact the Central Square Children's Room at 617-349-4012. This program is recommended for children ages 4+ and their caregivers.
City of Cambridge Announces Increased Investment and Launch of 10th Participatory Budgeting Process
Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a democratic process that empowers community members to help decide how to spend part of a public budget. The City will allocate a record-high $2 million for this year’s process, which doubles the previous budget of $1 million. The PB outreach team will be collecting ideas from the Cambridge community through direct outreach in public spaces and at public events Sept. 11-Oct. 9, 2023.
