The City of Cambridge will celebrate National Women’s Business Month during October to recognize the importance of women-owned businesses and highlight the women entrepreneurs who contribute so much to the local Cambridge economy.

Join Maria Lawton, Cookbook Author, TV host/Executive Producer, Speaker, Storyteller & Culinary Travel Guide for a presentation on Portuguese Cooking. Maria is the creator and host of the multi-award-winning PBS series Maria’s Portuguese Table, and the author of two beloved cookbooks: Azorean Cooking: From My Family Table to Yours and At My Portuguese Table, winner of the Bronze IPPY Award. Born in São Miguel Azores, Portugal and raised in the U.S., Maria has dedicated her career to preserving and sharing the rich culinary and cultural traditions of Portugal. With her signature warmth and heartfelt storytelling, she brings recipes to life—not just as food, but as vessels of memory, love, and heritage. She is now working on her next book “Baking with Love”, her first children’s cookbook, Maria returns to the kitchen of her childhood, recreating the sweet recipes she made side-by-side with her grandmother. It’s an act of rebellion to use your body in a public space, articulating power and transcending awkwardness or beauty. Two community workshops, led by Professor of Dance Christine Bennett, will involve movement as a path toward understanding and resiliency in our own bodies and community spaces. The workshops are appropriate for all movers ages 18 and up. Wear comfortable clothes. Register for one or both classes (5/13 & 5/20)

Every year, June is proclaimed Month of Portuguese Heritage in Massachusetts. Join us for a free concert at the Main Library in celebration of Portuguese Heritage Month. The concert will feature a jazz quartet performing works by Carlos Paredes and other Portuguese composers. Carlos Paredes (1925 – 2004), the most renowned Portuguese guitar composer, maintained significant artistic dialogues with other musical genres. Amongst his most important collaborations was an album recorded together with jazz musician Charlie Haden. The concert will also be a tribute to Paredes’ work on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The band consists of Tim Pascoal on piano; Gen Yoshimura on Drums; and Youngchae on upright bass. The performance will also feature Francisco Pais Cardoso on Guitar. A reception with Portuguese pastries will follow the concert. This event is cosponsored by the Cambridge Public Library and the Consulate General of Portugal in Boston, with the support of Camoes – Institute for Cooperation and Language (Portugal). Registration is required.

DePasquale activated the Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund for Covid-19 to raise money for individuals and families impacted by the virus outbreak. Tomorrow, April 8, the City will be releasing the eligibility and distribution guidelines and application process for Cambridge residents to apply for funds donated to the Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund. The City of Cambridge seeks to assist as many people as possible through these funds.

The Ethiopian Elder Group is creating a welcoming space where older adults who immigrated from Ethiopia can build friendships, access resources, and strengthen their independence in Cambridge. Learn how this community-led initiative, led by CEOC's Yemi Kibret and supported by City and nonprofit partners, has grown into a thriving program connecting more than 30 elders through education, wellness, and cultural celebration.
