The City Council approved a budget of $2.8 million for the creation of a Department of Community Safety (CDCS) that will coordinate community driven solutions to enhance safety and wellness through key services and programs targeted at our most vulnerable populations. CDCS will oversee the Cambridge Alternative Response Program and other efforts to supplement Cambridge Public Safety agencies in making the community a safer place to live, work, and experience for all.

The Cambridge Police Department continues to closely monitor the ongoing Israel/Hamas conflict overseas including the cease-fire negotiations underway now. In our initial alert last month, we relayed how we have been working with our state and federal partners. Currently, there continue to be no specific or credible threats in our area. In recent weeks, CPD has received reports of hate crime incidents. We are committed to safeguarding the state and federal civil rights of all individuals irrespective of their race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, or gender, and to aggressively investigating any reported acts or threats of violence, property damage, harassment, intimidation, or other crimes that appear motivated by bias against or hatred of a particular group. If you believe you, your business or organization has been the victim of a hate crime in Cambridge, please contact the Cambridge Police Department. The Cambridge Police will fully investigate, document, and respond to all allegations of bias or hate-motivated crime. We recognize this is a time of grief, uncertainty, and increased tension. The Cambridge City Council will continue to hold regular meetings. Members of the public cannot be physically present during the meeting, but can watch it meeting on the Municipal Channel 22-CityView or online via the City of Cambridge Open Meeting Portal at www.cambridgema.gov

The City of Cambridge today issued an emergency order allowing restaurants to sell groceries directly to consumers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The order creates a new opportunity for Cambridge residents to purchase surplus items such as meats, vegetables, dairy, canned goods and other limited grocery items through pick-up or delivery service from local restaurants throughout the city.
