This is a story about “John.” If you have visited Harvard Square anytime over the last two decades, there is a good chance you have come across John. He is one of the more well-known, long-term unhoused Cambridge residents in the Harvard Square area. But you might not know where his story started and how the Cambridge Police Department, Harvard Square Business Association, Healthcare for the Homeless, and many other agencies have been coming together to support John over the years.

The City of Cambridge today announced that it will be offering COVID-19 vaccine booster clinics by appointment only for eligible people aged 18 and older who live or work in Cambridge beginning on Thursday, December 9 and continuing on Monday, December 13 and Thursday, December 16 while supplies last.

Governor Baker announced that he will institute a statewide rollback to Phase III, Step 1 of the Commonwealth’s Reopening Plan on Sunday, December 13. Cambridge has remained at Step 1 of Phase III since the summer.

Join us to learn about the transformative power of prison gardens for people who are incarcerated. First, we’ll watch the award-winning 30-minute documentary, Seeds of Change, about a five-acre prison garden in Maine that has offered a gateway to wellness and dignity for prisoners. Following the documentary, the New Garden Society will present and answer questions about the work they do with prison gardens in the Greater Boston area.

Harvard Book Store and the Cambridge Public Library welcome Amitav Ghosh—author of the bestselling Ibis Trilogy and the first English-language writer to win the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honor—for a discussion of his highly anticipated new novel, Ghost Eye. He will be joined in conversation by Garnette Cadogan—Tunney Lee Distinguished Lecturer in Urbanism at the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT, and editor-at-large for Nonstop Metropolis. The deadline to apply for the next Civil Service exam to become a Cambridge Police Officer has been announced. The deadline to apply for the exam is January 28, 2025. The written examination is scheduled to take place between March 15, 2025 – March 22, 2025. All interested Cambridge residents are encouraged to apply by visiting www.cambridgepolice.org/joinCPD. The examination period may be extended depending on the number of candidates.

The Cambridge Housing Authority provides long-term rental housing and rental assistance. More than 10,000 low-income families, elders, and disabled individuals receive this assistance.
