The City of Cambridge Fossil Fuel Free Ordinance is effective March 22, 2024. The ordinance requires new buildings and major renovation projects to be fossil fuel-free. Fossil fuel-free means not using oil, gas, propane, or other fossil fuels. The requirements apply to both residential and non-residential building projects.

A 30-year-old Cambridge man was safely taken into custody and then transported to a local hospital last night following a reported armed assault. After the armed assault, he barricaded himself in his home until Cambridge Police officers were able to successfully enter and place the man into custody.

Expect road closures, traffic impacts, and a Sunday detour of the 69 bus due to events in Cambridge this weekend.

The Cambridge Police Department has a Family and Social Justice section that focuses on connecting with and directing resources to our most vulnerable populations. Four notable public safety responses have occurred since Friday. Each response involved residents who were struggling with mental health issues. Three of the four involved residents were armed. Each situation was resolved peacefully without any injuries to anyone involved and the residents were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), formerly called the Fuel Assistance Program, helps income-eligible residents who live in Cambridge or Somerville pay winter heating bills between November 1 and April 30. Renters and homeowners are eligible to apply if they meet federal income guidelines.
