The shelter, part of the Commonwealth’s Emergency Assistance Family Shelter system, is designed for eligible families in Massachusetts who are experiencing homelessness (eligible families must have children under 21 years of age and/or individuals who are pregnant) to stay while they work with case managers to find and move into stable, permanent housing.

Create 3-5 shaded seating areas in busy areas most in need of shade and seating. Each area will be 300 to 500 square feet and include shade canopies and inviting places to sit: bench swings, chairs, tables, and communal seating.

The pilot program, open to Cambridge residents ages 60 and older, will operate on Thursdays and Fridays from November 6, 2025 through January 16, 2026. For 14 years volunteers have been coming together on MLK DAY to provide critical necessities to people served by more than 70 organizations in Cambridge and surrounding towns.
